Geekin’ it

One of my favourite comic series to read has been the DC elseworld comic “Kingdom Come”. I love, not only the storyline, but most importantly I love the artwork.

first the storyline:

It is essentially set in a future where the DC heroes that we grew up with (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman etc.) have grown older. The world that they were used to have changed. Whereas, before the heroes would apprehend the bad guys, the world began to accept a more violent type of hero. One that took life rather than preserved it. Essentially the heroes of old come out of “retirement” to deal with the new heroes when a catastrophe happens. It is a clash of different heroic cultures that eventually breaks out into all-out war.

Of course my summary is very brief because I didn’t want to give away too much of the story. I love the character development of each of the heroes as the story progresses.

Now for the artwork. In all honesty, even before I read the comic it was the artwork of Alex Ross that drew me in. Most artists that draw for comics, draw them in a pretty cartoony way. But Alex Ross adds so much realism to it. In all honesty the way that he draws the big three (Superman, Batman and Wonderman) is simply epic. But me talking about it really doesn’t do it justice, so instead here is a drawing he did with the Kingdom Come characters:

Alex Ross by far has to be my favourite comic book artist out there. Every single one of his drawings have so much depth and character to it. He even makes Gatchaman look awesome as a more realistic looking character and less anime-y

Yeah, so this post was pretty geeky, oh well.

The things that make me press in

I don’t know if I have done a post like this on this blog in particular, I know I did something similar to this on my old blog. But basically this one is coming about because of inspiration, part of the credit goes to a Matt Chandler sermon I was listening to, and the other one came from a friends blog.  However that being said, after essentially hearing/reading the same message today, I have decided to expand the original concept that I had for this post. Originally I was going to just list things that refreshed me and/or brought me joy and at the same time caused me to press into Jesus….which would bring me joy. So I’ll start off with the list, and the add my expansion.

The things that cause me to press and worship Jesus:

1) spending time by myself reading the Bible or theology books: This in essence is one of the main ways in which I recharge. I especially like doing this when I have been around either too many people, or people for too long.  I love reading books. I love reading the Bible, and by love I mean, more often than not I find that it convicts me much of the time, but God uses it to change me. ditto with the theology books.

2) listening to a sermon while biking or working out:  I find that even more than just reading. Working out and listening to a sermon re-energizes not only my soul but also my body as well.

3) making food for friends: I love cooking for my friends. and I am thankful that God gave me this gift of cooking (although a lot of things are still hit or miss, the things that taste good I share with my friends…although sometimes I kind of think it up and let them be the testers….and it turns out alright 🙂 )

4) taking a nap: I like to sleep, it is refreshing for my body and it is refreshing for me mentally and emotionally.

5) video games: although I am thankful that I can’t sit down for more than an hour and play one nowadays, I still on occasion do like playing video games.

6) Manga and Comics: Japanese comics, I enjoy reading them. I enjoy the artwork, although for the most part the storylines aren’t all that original, there is still something that is refreshing about it for me. ditto for comics.

7) Anime, web series: I do this to unwind, not to forget about school but really to aid in me not continuously think about school. I find it helps alot.

Now a lot of these are morally neutral (anime, manga, comics and video games have some sketchy items but generally speaking, as a whole…they are morally neutral) however, these things, especially because I enjoy them, can easily turn from good things used to refresh me, to god-things. I can easily begin to worship them if I forget that, yes they are good, yes they are refreshing to a point, but they cannot and will not satisfy the depths of my soul. Yes they can draw me closer to the One that ultimately created these things (God) but they can also enslave me.  I would be lying if I said that it hasn’t happened before, because it has. I would not be so arrogant as to say that it’ll never happen again, or that it isn’t happening now. I hope that by God’s grace that it will never happen again, and that it isn’t happening now. And if does happen again, my prayer is that God will UTTERLY convict me (even though I will not like it, and not necessarily want it…but I know that it is necessary).  The further I move away from the Cross, the more appealing everything else seems. The more it appears that these things that I’ve listed (and maybe even didn’t list) can save me, can satisfy me, can fulfill my desire to worship. But I know, that it will leave me incomplete, it will leave me parched and thirsty.

If there is one thing that I can pull away from this, one thing that I hope you will pull away from this. Is that it is so easy to get caught up in the things that are good, and because of our nature it is so easy to turn them into god. But by God’s Grace, because of the Cross, we can stand under and be grounded in the Blood of the Lamb, we can come to Jesus, the Living Waters….the Bread of Life and be fully satisfied infinitely more than those good things could ever provide. Look, I’m not saying cut the things that you love to do out of your life. If God uses them to refresh you, to draw you closer to Him, by all means do them. But remember to give praise to the One who created them, and not the things that were created.

Top 5 fav openings

Yes yes, its time for another list. another pointless, time-wasting, but oh so fun list….if you think I’m being sarcastic. I’m actually not. I really do enjoy making these, but I also realize that they are pointless, they don’t necessarily add or detract from life, all they do is spark up some nostalgia (some of them should at least). Which I guess, is it’s point. Thereby contridicting what I just stated.

….Anyway, today’s list will be the my favourite openings for television shows….at least that I can remember. This list is not relegated to just live-action, or soley cartoons. It will span all both. So without further stalling. I give you: My top 5 favourite openings

5) Batman the Animated series

Oh man, what is there to say about this opening? I loved, and still enjoy, watching this series. From the opening you could already tell it wasn’t gonna be the Adam West goofy over the top Batman. Instead you were given a glimpse of a Batman series that would be a whole lot darker, and the opening orchestral music just sets the whole atmostphere. Awesome.

4) Samurai Champloo

I think the only reason why I love this video so much (despite the really off-beat, not-oft rhyming that causes me to cringe) is because the opening is so different than what would usually be expected from a show set in ancient Japan. I mean, it’s freakin’ hiphop for the opening theme, usually with shows like this we would typically hear more classical sounding music. Music that would be assumed to have been played during that era….not hiphop.

3) Criminal Minds

I love the show. I love the opening. It sets the mood for the whole show, really it does. it’s kind of got that creepy feel to it. And really a lot of the show is like that, it’s creepy…the fact that people can act like that. Even though the show is fictional, in the opening sequence they do show pictures of actual criminals.

2) This place is a tie between two shows with excellent openings. The two shows are: The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Seriously, both of these shows have been a favourite of mine for a while. And every time I hear the opening/see the openings, I can’t help but get nostalgic. They were so….90’s. With TMNT, it was kind of deceptive because the opening looked kind of dark, and a little edgy. But what we got was a plain ol’ goofy masterpiece. Fresh Prince was kind of deceptive too, I mean, the opening made it seem like the show would always be a not that serious. They constantly dealt with serious issues ranging from racism, to health, to even father abandonment (I’m not gonna lie, that episode was a tear-jerker).

With those two epic openings at number 2, how am I gonna top them? Well, I say I will top it with….

1) Cowboy Bebop

I don’t even really like this show. But I LOVE its opening theme. Really, I’m just a sucker for brass instruments and jazz. Again, like Samurai Champloo it’s so different. I mean, most shows set in the future (esp. anime) tend to have an edgier opening. But this is just plain awesome.

There you have it. My list of favourite openings. Enjoy. And hopefully some of these will spark up some nostalgia for you. I know it did for me as I watched them.

My top 5 favourite animes…ever*

Well, like I said yesterday, these next few days I’m going to have a top 5 of MY own favourite [insert subject here] list. And this one is my top 5 favourite animes….ever. For this one, I decided that I will not just insert a clip of the show, instead I will insert one whole episode (the first episode for every show). just so you can watch it for a full half hour or so.

And just so we are clear, there are some amazing people that have translated these shows for a long time. Just so that people (like me) can watch many Japanese anime shows that would not be brought over to North America.

5) Major
Major Episode 1

This is an amazing show. It tells a tale of a young boy whose dream is to become an ace pitcher in baseball like his dad. This show spanned four seasons, with each season Goro (the main character) becomes older and continues to pursue his dream. There is tragedy and whatnot within the storyline. The characters are well-developed, well drawn and most of them are quite likeable.

4)Yakitate!! Japan

Ok, this is kind of a wierd choice I know, but I really enjoy this show. Not only for its sheer ridiculousness but also for the fact that its a show about making bread. Seriously, the producers, animators, and voice actors (and of course the manga from which it was adapted from) make this concept come flawlessly together and they make “making bread” appear completely epic. The gags and puns are so ridiculous that that I couldn’t help but laugh.

3)Ookiku Furikabutte
Ookiku Furikabutte ep 1

this is another show about baseball. This one is about a newly created baseball team with a talented pitcher who is very hard working but has no self-confidence. It really is just about a bunch of kids that want to win, while relying and helping the pitcher have confidence that the stuff he has is actually good. There’s just something about all the characters that are so likeable (with maybe the exception of the pitcher, he is kind of annoying), but the art style is unique quite unique in terms of facial expressions and what not. The story isn’t half bad either.

2) Bartender
Bartender ep.1

Now this one is very different from my number one choice as well as my previous three. If I had to describe this show in one word, I think that word would be “classy”. There really isn’t a central plot, save for the fact that there is a bar called Eden Hall where a young bartender serves drinks to people of all walks of life. There in that bar while drinking their drink, they reflect on their life and their problems while conversing with the bartender and acquiring almost life changing but obvious advice from him. There isn’t any action or really excitement but it tends to be a type of feel-good show.

1) Gintama
Gintama ep.1&2

this has become one of my favourite, if not my favourite anime….ever (and I actually mean that seriously, without change). It is set in ancient Japan when they were very heavily influenced by foreign occupation. In history the ones that occupied Japan were the U.S. However in this show, the U.S forces are replaced by aliens (this allows the author to put in parodies of new tech…Bentendo Oowee in Ep.99 and 100, that was one of my favourite episodes). There is so much that this show offers, the humour is sometimes rich and sometimes low-brow, I love the characters, especially Gintoki (the natural permed silver haired samurai who loves sweet things but is diabetic) and just how he interacts with people. Its a great great show. and I highly reccomend that you definately watch this show off my list…if you were to choose one to sample.

So there you have it, my top 5 animes…ever* these shows sadly will probably never be imported to North American soil, and if they were….they would probably be butchered with poor voice acting and really bad editing (*coughONEPIECEcough*)

Any suggestions for the next list will be welcome!
