My top 5 video game theme songs.

I love soundtracks. If anything I LOVE video game theme songs, the reason for this is most likely because it is very rare that i hear really bad themes. I hear forgettable ones, but nothing really horrible. Now this list is definately not definitive, in fact most likely I’ll probably end up making another one (like a just missed the cut list or something) but here are my top 5 (loose) video game theme songs.

5) The Final Fantasy Prelude

This I think, is the definitive final fantasy music for me. Everytime I hear it, I know I am playing final fantasy. I love how relaxing it is, ย how dreamlike (fantasy like….) it is. With this prelude, Square-enix is announcing to those that are playing “You are about to be sucked into a massive magical world, where you are the hero trying to save the entire planet from a maniacal madman. So level up and save it.”

4) Mega Man II theme

I admit, I have never actually beaten a mega man game. Yet I grew up on them, I was never any good at them. But I did love the theme. Everytime I heard it, for some reason I would forget why I hated the game…and then I played it, and then I remembered. haha. The music, in all it’s 8bit glory, was designed to get the adrenaline pumping, and that it did. ๐Ÿ™‚

3) Double Dragon

Everytime I hear this theme I know I am in for some serious electronic, programmed fun. I mean, the song just screams “I am full of action, and awesome!” One of the best songs, for one of the best games (though not one of my favourites) ever. Love it.

2) Tetris

bet you didn’t see this one coming. I’m not sure what you can say about this theme. All I know is, everytime I hear it, I start picturing tetris blocks falling and begin to imagine the full lines disappearing. And for the most part I think that is what makes a truly unforgettable video game theme, something that can conjure up images from a game that hasn’t been played in years. Classic. So Classic.

1) Legend of Zelda

I had a hard time choosing what would be number 1. It was pretty difficult to choose between super mario, or the legend of zelda. In the end this won out simply because it’s so much more epic. It’s like a theme that would be played before an epic movie (like Braveheart). It just conjures up a sense of adventure, danger, drama, and excitement. PS: Check out Rabbitjoints version, it’s pretty awesome too.

There you have it, my list of top 5 favourite video game themes. Again, it’s not my definitive list, because Out of the ones that weren’t on here, they could honestly be changed with any of them (The Street Fighter II world warrior theme for instance) so I may do another list….”the remix” or something.

What are your favourite theme songs?

Geekin’ it

One of my favourite comic series to read has been the DC elseworld comic “Kingdom Come”. I love, not only the storyline, but most importantly I love the artwork.

first the storyline:

It is essentially set in a future where the DC heroes that we grew up with (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman etc.) have grown older. The world that they were used to have changed. Whereas, before the heroes would apprehend the bad guys, the world began to accept a more violent type of hero. One that took life rather than preserved it. Essentially the heroes of old come out of “retirement” to deal with the new heroes when a catastrophe happens. It is a clash of different heroic cultures that eventually breaks out into all-out war.

Of course my summary is very brief because I didn’t want to give away too much of the story. I love the character development of each of the heroes as the story progresses.

Now for the artwork. In all honesty, even before I read the comic it was the artwork of Alex Ross that drew me in. Most artists that draw for comics, draw them in a pretty cartoony way. But Alex Ross adds so much realism to it. In all honesty the way that he draws the big three (Superman, Batman and Wonderman) is simply epic. But me talking about it really doesn’t do it justice, so instead here is a drawing he did with the Kingdom Come characters:

Alex Ross by far has to be my favourite comic book artist out there. Every single one of his drawings have so much depth and character to it. He even makes Gatchaman look awesome as a more realistic looking character and less anime-y

Yeah, so this post was pretty geeky, oh well.

Top 5 fav. video games

So I’ve decided to add my favourite video games. I’m not a huge huge gamer but I do enjoy it. Throughout my years I’ve played many games, some I’ve enjoyed and some not so much. So here are my top 5 favourite games, that I’ve played.

5) Kirby Superstar or most Kirby games for that matter.

I love Kirby. Kirby is awesome, he absorbs powers and so freaking cute. The game is difficult, but not frustratingly so. The controls are easy and straight forward, and the controls are very good. The later games offered like….a billion different powers that you could absorb. It was always fun trying each of them, and of course some were WAY more effective than others. Plus the fact that Kirby turns the enemy he swallows and spits out into stars is also pretty cool.

Normal Kirby....is....so cute

4) Mario Kart

I LOVE Mario Kart….in any form. Seriously. Its fun. I don’t really have anything else to say.Gameplay is good, the power-ups are so much fun, and the stages are really fun too.

Zoom zoom zoom!

3) Metal Slug

Despite the fact that Metal Slug gives me so much frustration, I still love it anyway. It’s one ofย  my favourite series ever. and I’m so glad that SNK ported the anthology to the PSP. Now (whenever I get it) I can play it on the go. It’s bullets flying everywhere insanity fun!

blow up the giant crabs-like-things!

2) Disgaea series

This is the first, and only RPG to crack this top 5 list. I really enjoy the character designs, and it’s ridiculously outlandish power-ups + the pretty much unlimited leveling up system. And for some reason I really like the fact that instead of the typical classic JRPG hero (just typically good and without that much of a personality), the Disgaea heroes,…..many of them are anti-heroes with outlandish personalities. Which = a hilariously fun series to play. Plus the Prinnies are hilarious!

Prinnies explode when you throw 'em!

1) Katamari series

I have never really played a game quite like this. You basically have a Katamari, which is a gravitational ball of sorts, and roll over stuff to make islands. Sounds lame but it’s a wacky wacky concept, and it’s so much fun to play. The characters are really funny too. If I ever get a PS2, I’ll be sure to pick up the Katamari games for it. Because it will most likely be fun….definately be fun!

A Katamari in it's full glory ๐Ÿ™‚

There you have it, it is my top 5 fav. video games.ย  I know it’s pretty nerdy, and really the choices for 3-1 are probably way out there. But really, they are so much fun. the Controls are fantastic, and the characters are unique, plus these are games that have a sense of humour, plus if I recall the soundtrack for each game is simply fantastic, which I love. ๐Ÿ™‚

Honourable mentions (aka they just missed the cut):

Patapon 2: I never really liked rhythm games, but I found this game fantastic.

Grandia: such a great RPG.

Lunar Silver Star Harmony: Again a great RPG.

Super Mario Bros series: classic awesome.

Monster Hunter: despite all the frustration it gives me because of the camera and slow pace and difficulty, it’s still a fun game with massive amounts of upgrades and whatnot.

Street Fighter and King of Fighters series: Oh man oh man oh man oh man, these 2D fighters are classic, the characters for each are mostly amazing designs (Terry Bogard, Kyo Kusanagi, Fei Long and Ken rock my world haha) the controls are good and its all in all a goood game.

My top 5 fav frustrating games.

I love old school games…the side scrolling difficulty (especially when everything is shooting at you). Even on easy the games are difficult unless you have memorized projectile/enemy flight/shooting/fighting patterns. This leads to constant frustration for me, in fact I think the games on this list…I have never beaten the games once. It’s stressful haha.

So here is my list for my top 5 fav frustrating games:

5) Ghouls and Ghosts

And every other installment of this franchise. It’s timed, and you can only take two hits (apparently the enemies are made up of some type of superstrong acid because you dissolve into bones and then nothing upon the second touch) . And zombies are everywhere. but Arthur is manly, because even when he has no armor and is fighting in his underwear, he still manages to launch lances/whatever weapon you have at the moment from somewhere.

This game causes me (whenever I decide to play it) so much frustration…I’ve never gotten past the first level. I have yet to figure out the timing of it, and in all honesty, I don’t think I could sit down and play through it without wanting to throw something against a wall…or scream in frustration. And yet, occassionally it still pulls me back. There’s something fun and challenging about the whole two hits and your dead thing…I don’t know why I still torture myself with this game, because I know once I start playing it I’ll get sooooooo angry.

Arthur pretends to not notice the night wind as he kills zombies to rescue the princess

4) R-Type

Oh my gosh. I love R-type. and by love I mean, I desperately want to hate it….so much. It’s so freaking freaking difficult. More than Ghouls n’ Ghosts, this game requires an epic amount of time to memorize flight paths and what not. Everything just flies at you. And it’s helpful that you get “the Force” (no disrespect to Star Wars…but the Force in R-Type totally owns the Star Wars “Force” simply because it is an indestructible spherical attachment to you ship…yeah eat that Death Star). It acts as a shield and a secondary weapons system. That’s just awesome. But still, even with the Force, victory will be hard pressed because things are flying at you from….well, everywhere. This game makes you memorize how all the enemies fire and fly so you won’t die thirty seconds after respawning.

Frick R-type I love to play you but you make me so frustrated.

who wouldn't want to fly this thing? I'd take it over an X-wing anyday

3) Battletoads

How I loathe Battletoads. This is a game that’s just unforgivingly hard. It’s not necessary that you memorize attack patterns because this is just a beat-em up. So you don’t need to memorize things like where bullets are gonna go but seriously some of the stages are just insane. Like the third one when you have to jump and dodge walls on hoverbikes, then the stage gets faster and faster and then you die. and die. and die. and die. I’ve never ever gotten past the third stage and I haven’t played this game in a long long time. So I’d probably die even sooner.

If I had to pick one, I would say this is the one game that probably made me throw something. but it’s not number one soley for the fact that I haven’t played it in a while. I would probably enjoy it….until I got to the third stage. and died…and died…and died.

Hoverbikes....I haaaaate you!

2) Tie between Metal Slug and Contra

They are part of the same genre but take two very very very different approaches. But for me both are equally frustrating.

If I had to seperate them, Contra would have to be the more serious one. The graphics were darker, and the whole game as a whole was darker. So you are basically fighting off an endless army of people and aliens. And along the way you get weapon power ups w/ unlimited ammo. But one hit and you are dead…and you lose the power up. And let me tell you, its easy to get hit in this game. There are just bullets flying everywhere.

Metal Slug is a game that doesn’t really take itself seriously. It has really bright colours and cartoony graphics which lead to really cartoony deaths. It’s awesome. As you proceed through a stage you rescue soldiers who leave you either extra bombs, different weapon power ups (w/limited ammo) or point items. You also have the ability to ride in a tank called a Slug (hence the name metal slug), these rideable machines were expanded in later Metal Slug games. But like Contra, you are being shot at from….everywhere. But both of these games despite their stupid difficulty are still so much fun to play.

And if I had a choice between these two, I would have to go with Metal Slug…just because of the bright cartoony graphics. That is always a win for me.

I don't think Rambo would have stood a chance.

Cartoon violent insanity FTW!

1) Gradius and Parodius

Oh my gosh, I hate you Gradius (and every other installment that I’ve played) and Parodius. You keep on drawing me in with your gameplay, and with the same gameplay you laugh and mock my lack of skills for Shmups (shoot-’em ups).

More than the R-9a “arrowhead” I would rather be piloting the Vic Viper (the Gradius flag ship) just because of the many many many insane power-ups you have. But like every game on this list (except for Battletoads), one or two hits (unless you have the shield and then it becomes 5 hits or so) and you die….losing all your power-ups and become freaking freaking slow. ….yes, speed is a power up in this game.

Like every other game on this list, I love Gradius. It plays well, and the difficulty….well I guess it was standard for this genre. Everything is just flying at you, and there are some ridiculous imagery for this game (Easter Island heads….in space shooting laser rings out of their mouths at you = amazing!)

Parodius is essentially the same game (both Gradius and Parodius are made by Konami) but a far more light hearted version and not just with the Vic Viper but also with a penguin, octopus and a robot plane….thing. It’s difficult and hilarious….and like Gradius, really frustrating sometimes. The enemies are no longer spaceships but animals and insects.

This guy here has the list of all the characters that appear in the Parodius games, plus a way better article on them.

Vic Viper has the coolest power-ups to battle Easter Island head weapons

Parodius = plain awesome

There you have it my top 5 fav. games that cause me great great frustration. The games aren’t bad…they are well made, they are just really really hard. Either that or I just really really suck at playing these games.
